Get Out (2017)
Get Out (2017)
Hello there! people of the internet, since I have my Hindi
Exam next and I work great under extreme pressure and anxiety, I decided to
rewatch 2017’s Jordan Peele’s directorial debut “Get Out”. I feel like there
should have been an exclamation point at the end of the movie’s title, but that
would’ve been too wonky for a movie masquerading under the genre of a horror
Comedy.
Since Jordan Peele’s upcoming Horror “US(2019)” Gave me a
lot of anticipation and I would not be able to review it until it comes to Blue
ray, I decided to review Get out again. This movie has won several Oscars and
nominated for quite a few awards so I believe, It has already been praised to
death . So Instead of doing a review, I’d like to just instead do a more of
Discussion, since I am no Movie Critique per say as much as I’d like to
consider myself one. I am more of a fan and don’t like to believe that I need
to over analyze every single little detail in even cheap masala movies. So when
movies like Get Out Comes out, which obviously has a lot of symbolism and fun
little easter eggs, I get excited.
So, with that intro out of the way let us discuss/review Get
Out. Do leave a comment if you read this part as most people just skip through
my intros. I’d love to do a podcast if only I wasn’t afraid of the world’s
reaction to my weird accent and deeply “Charming” personality.
THE STORY
Now, Since this movie does have a lot of smart racial
commentary and since I am neither black nor white. I am more of a brown person,
the movie still made me think of the interactions that most white people have
with black people and how some things do sound so off.
Now, if you have been living under a rock and don’t know
what the premise of the movie is, let me help you out, the movie is about
Chris’ little weekend over at his girlfriend Rose’s house. Chris is a black
African American man and has been dating Rose for over 4 months and then Rose
decides to invite him over to her parent’s, obviously without telling her parents
that Chris is black. Atleast this is what the trailers and the first minutes of
the movie present to you.
When Chris finally meets the Armitages, he realizes that
something isn’t right. You see the underlying racism that lingers even in the
modern society, I like to call it “Polite Racism” where you do acknowledge the
person’s race which is fine but then go ahead and say things through which you
try to sympathies but not in the kind of way that you should. Anyway, as the
movie moves forward it starts to become clear that something isn’t just not
right but something is definitely not how it seems.
To give you a small example, the Armitages have black
servants who behave oddly like they are in some peculiar state of mind where
they don’t speak like how normally people of that area speak. The Patriarch of the Armitages, Dean Armitage
says that he’d have definitely voted for Obama for a third term, which is
something I hear quite a lot on tweeter and is kinda true with everyone. Rose’s mother Missy Armitage is a therapist
and Rose’s brother Jeremy is a douche.
All of these characters are well layered and quite fun to
watch overall. Rose’s denial to consider her family racist and how chill Chris
behaves even in the most awkward of situations is just Cherry On the icing on
of a very well rounded cake.
I think the story, despite being quite eccentric by the end,
does have quite a well realized world in which Peele weaves his story. This
movie’s story was something that I’m sure Peele must have taken his time to
develop and it despite being a bit absurd still felt quite good to watch. The
Story does have its fair share of horror but at the same time features a good
comic relief and some great social commentary on modern subtle racism.
THE DIRECTION
Now I haven’t seen a lot of Jordan Peele’s skits, I did see
a couple and they did make me chuckle a bit but nothing that really captured my
attention to be very honest. However, I do believe that Get Out was directed
with keeping a lot of horror tropes in mind and also finally allowing a
character make smart decisions in the movie while also having a character who
pretty much represents the audience’s perspective in the form of Rod the TSA
agent.
The movie does title itself as a horror comedy, but it
doesn’t scare you as much as it intrigues you. The movie tries to slide into
the direction of being a little horror and a little comedy, with the comedy
being only in scenes with Rod while the horror is Chris and his little stint in
the Armitage’s house. The movie doesn’t give you scary vibes every single
second but instead it has this ominous feeling that is very hard to put a
finger on. The first time watch of this movie will entertain you a lot and you
will just have your mind blown in different ways as these creepy white people
become more and more intriguing as the movie moves forward.
The movie has a lot of cool shots, the first couple
sequences show you a lot of zoomed out shots while also scenes with extreme
close ups, right in the nitty gritty.
Now, Jordan has been in the film industry for a lot of years
and probably has a lot of experience doing shows from MTV’s to their own Comedy
Central stint Key and Peele, Hence it is not hard to believe that with doing
great writing, comedy, and acting, Jordan is also great behind the camera as a
director. It would be pretty hard to believe that this was a directorial debut if not told before hand.
Hence In conclusion to The Direction part, Jordan does
pretty good for a debutant director.
THE ACTING/STARRING
Daniel Kaluuya stars as one of the chilliest people ever in
situations in which I would just run away, Chris Washington. Rose is played by Allison
Williams who is plain gorgeous, Missy Is played by Catherine Kinner , she plays
a very similar character to the one she plays in Being John Malkovich. Bradely
Whitford plays Dean the neurosurgeon father of Rose and is as charismatic as
ever. And a personal favorite character of mine in the history of horror
movies, Rod is played by Lil Rel Howery.
Now, I didn’t know Daniel Kaluuya was british and when he
came up on Stephen Colbert, I was quite surprised to hear his british accent.
He really does play Chris with this certain amount of charisma and calmness,
while he doesn’t even miss a beat with the American accent. There are scenes where Daniel Kaluuya is
given the stage to show complete acting prowess and he nails it each second.
All the other characters, such as Walter and Georgina (the
servants) are also casted and acted out really really well. Best of all is Rod
the TSA agent who just sounds too good to be true in a horror movie but he is true
and it is the most satisfying to watch Rod just totally steal the scenes by
totally owning them.
CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION
The movie’s premise and characterization is just soo good
that any of the eccentric plot threads make complete sense by the end. I swear,
after finishing the movie you have to rewind and watch it again to notice all
the subtle hints in the sequences and just how there is literally no plot
holes. Instead there is so much subtle foreshadowing of what is gonna happen
later on in the film that your mind will be blown a second time.
The little hints and parallel with the Deer, are just some
examples of great film making done by Jordan Peele. This all basically excites
me more and more to just watch the upcoming US. Which is not supposed to be a
comedy as much as it is a horror.
Also I’ve heard a bit about the fact that Jordan Peele would
also be leading us into a revamp of the twilight zone which excites me even
more. Can’t wait to see how and what Peele does with The Twilight Zone remake.
As for Get Out. It probably is a 4/5 for me. A pretty solid
movie. Totally worth your time.
