The Amazing World of Dragon Ball Z

When I was about 6 or 7, there was this show that would air at about 10pm every night on Cartoon Network after repeats of Ben 10. Now, despite the fact that it would come daily, I was never actually able to watch it or follow the thing because 6-year-old me had this thing called ''a sleep schedule'' without dark circles or insomnia attached. So watching the show was already a pain because either I had to wake up really early to catch the re-runs or somehow sneak into the hall and watch it at 10pm (I mostly resorted to the former). Now full disclosure, yours sincerely might seem like an average over-smart teenager now but back then I didn't really understand the show all that much. I would mostly watch it because it looked really cool and edgy. The opening enough made me want to keep my eyes glued to the screen.

In my opinion, It still looks pretty badass.

If you didn't catch it, that show was Dragon Ball Z and I think that show can be singlehandedly blamed for all of the interest I have in art and drawing because I was so intrigued by the design choices made by Akira Toriyama that I had an instant desire to try and replicate the characters, we'll talk about all that later because first, we need to get some more CONTEXT.

Dragon Ball Z was released way before I was born, back in the 90s. It released in India back in 2001 and then had reruns throughout the decade. I happened to catch one such rerun back when I was 6 or 7. I will obviously not reveal when was that because that would lead to my account privileges to be revoked (joke).

Now, again full disclosure because I would want to be honest to all of you, I don't really remember anything at all from what I had watched as a kid. By the time I had started watching it regularly, the show was already way into the Android Saga and I knew doodoo about the previous arcs and sagas so I just watched it without really understanding too much. An example is that I didn't really know that a human was different from a saiyan and that someone had to be a saiyan to turn into a supersaiyan. I also remember that I would be absolutely thrilled and excited each time the show's theme began with its colorful cast of characters looking absolutely badass and crazy. I mean just look at the opening and tell me if that doesn't get you pumped up.

I even started drawing comic versions of the show by myself in my free time, I would share it with this friend I had in class and we would add lines and draw together. It was something that I really liked doing and even though it didn't really develop into anything I still think that I enjoyed spending my time creating art for a show that I barely understood but still loved to the core.

I did eventually watch the show completely, finished all the arcs and kind of moved on. Anime wasn't really that much of a phenomena back then. The popularity in Anime has surged and resulted in a lot of people watching it and enjoying some of the best animation, art and stories Japan has to offer. I haven't been as active in enjoying Anime. Most of my hobbies have kind of fallen apart over the years. But I am planning to start watching a few of them in my spare time (I say as I take an excruciating plunge into a course that apparently leaves little time to even breathe).

That's it for today guys, do comment some of your favourite anime that shaped your childhood.
Bye,
Sam
